Industrial Sensors for Condition Monitoring and Edge AI

Select industrial sensors around the measurement, interface, mounting and calibration requirements of a custom monitoring system.

Choose the measurement before the sensor

Industrial sensors should be selected from the decision they support. A temperature sensor reports a local thermal condition; a vibration sensor captures motion at its mounting point. A useful measurement specification includes range, bandwidth, accuracy, sampling, mounting and environmental exposure. Sensor resolution alone does not establish system accuracy.

Current transducer, vibration and temperature

Motor monitoring often benefits from complementary measurements. A current transducer observes electrical loading, an accelerometer captures mechanical motion and a temperature probe tracks a slower thermal response. Compare these signals with speed and load rather than applying an isolated threshold to every operating state.

A thermocouple and a resistance temperature detector require different interfaces and calibration considerations. Sensor response time, contact with the measured surface and cable routing influence the result. Specify the complete acquisition chain, including isolation and input protection where needed.

Manifold absolute pressure: a pressure-sensing example

Manifold absolute pressure refers to pressure measured against a vacuum reference in an intake manifold. It illustrates why the reference matters: absolute, gauge and differential pressure answer different questions. Before choosing a pressure sensor or pressure transducer, specify the pressure reference, medium, range, transient behavior and mechanical connection.

Encoder and inertial measurement unit

A rotary encoder measures rotation relative to its configured reference. An inertial measurement unit combines inertial measurements such as acceleration and angular rate. Sensor fusion needs timestamps, coordinate definitions and calibration, not just several connected sensors. Check the sampling and synchronization requirements before choosing the embedded processor.

Integrate environmental and process measurements

Humidity, moisture, ambient light, gas, flow and water-level sensing each depend on placement and exposure. For a connected installation, document the sensing location, units, calibration date and communication format. A proximity sensor used to count an event has different timing requirements from an ambient temperature sensor used for a trend.

A practical sensor-integration brief

Provide the physical quantity, expected operating range, required response time, installation drawing and available power. Add the maintenance and recalibration plan. Alvexis can scope the electronics, acquisition firmware and enclosure around this brief. The design should include a repeatable test with known inputs before measurements are used to trigger operational decisions.
