A measurement chain, not just a sensor
Condition monitoring starts with the mechanical path from the asset to the sensing element. Mounting stiffness, orientation and local resonances can change the spectrum before software sees it. Sensor range and noise density must then match both the expected vibration and the earliest fault signatures worth detecting.
Sample for the fault, not for the dashboard
A slow trend can show that overall vibration is rising, but it may hide bearing impacts or short transients. The acquisition strategy should define bandwidth, sample rate, window length and trigger conditions from the target failure modes. Scheduled windows provide repeatable trends; event-triggered capture preserves unusual behavior without streaming continuously.
Turn raw windows into operational evidence
RMS, peak, crest factor and spectral-band energy are useful only when tied to operating state. Speed, load and temperature provide essential context. Edge processing can classify windows, retain representative raw samples and transmit compact features so engineers can investigate an alert without moving every sample over the network.
Design the wireless link around decisions
Commissioning, routine summaries, alerts and diagnostic downloads have different bandwidth and power requirements. Separating these traffic classes allows the radio, battery and storage strategy to serve the maintenance workflow instead of forcing one link to handle every case.
| Design question | Engineering implication |
|---|---|
| Which faults matter? | Sets sensor bandwidth, range and feature selection. |
| How does the machine operate? | Defines load-aware baselines and acquisition triggers. |
| What must be transmitted? | Balances local storage, edge analytics and radio duty cycle. |
| How is it mounted? | Controls repeatability and high-frequency measurement quality. |
