Battery Monitoring Systems: Embedded Hardware Design Considerations

Understand battery monitoring and BMS design boundaries, measurement interfaces, protection responsibilities and validation planning.

Battery management system vs battery monitoring system

A battery monitoring system acquires and reports measurements. A battery management system may also coordinate protection, balancing and operating limits. Define these functions separately before selecting the electronics. A dashboard showing voltage and temperature should not be presented as a complete protective BMS.

This article describes engineering considerations for a custom project. It does not announce a ready-made Alvexis BMS or a qualified battery safety product.

Current and temperature measurement

Specify the battery chemistry, series arrangement, voltage range, current range and temperature locations. The acquisition chain needs an appropriate reference, calibration approach and isolation strategy. Sampling and timestamping should make the recorded measurements meaningful under charge, discharge and idle conditions.

MOSFET switching and protection interfaces

MOSFET switching, input protection and power management choices depend on the electrical fault conditions the design must handle. A current measurement path and a protection path have different responsibilities. Establish behavior for sensor failure, processor restart and a lost communication link before integrating supervisory software.

Battery management system for an electric vehicle

Vehicle and stationary applications impose different operating and integration constraints. For lithium-ion batteries, define the cell chemistry and the manufacturer’s permitted operating limits. A BMS battery design for LiFePO4 cannot be specified solely by the label on the chemistry; the complete pack, interfaces and validation plan matter.

Validation before deployment

An engineering brief should identify who owns pack design, protection behavior, firmware, mechanical integration and acceptance testing. Review normal operation and defined fault cases with the responsible specialists. State-of-charge estimates and anomaly alerts need their own evaluation evidence; they are not interchangeable with independent protective measures.

Scope the custom electronics project

Bring the pack architecture, interface requirements, installation conditions and validation responsibilities. Alvexis can evaluate the measurement electronics and embedded integration scope with the development team. The first deliverable should be a reviewed architecture and test plan, not an unsupported claim of safety or production readiness.
